The $3,000 brand from Arts+Sciences

This is an idea I’ve been kicking around for a while now. I put this presentation up on Slideshare just to show it around, and it got picked to be featured on the front page. So, I guess it’s time to talk about it.

We’re in a world where, if you want some branding done, you can either do it yourself (time-consuming), get a freelancer to do it (scary) or hire a big agency to do it (expensive).

I see a lot of start-ups that think that hiring an outside agency to do your branding is a waste of time and money. That you should have someone on your team do the logo.

Yes, lots of startups have a designer on staff, but they’re also working on the product, which should take priority.

Plus, your brand is so much more than just a logo. It’s how you communicate with the outside world (with partners, investors and most importantly, your users).

But it’s true that working with an agency can be expensive. And time-consuming during a stage when you should mostly be focusing on your MVP.

So I’m thinking there’s a market for a simpler relationship with your agency.

  • All-in, no haggle, no stress pricing.
  • Get the initial “must-have” branding done in a month.
  • Pick one new “must-have” branding/marketing project per month, backlogging the rest.

One branding project a month keeps things manageable. Plus, you don’t blow your budget on a bunch of things that have to be re-done if you pivot.

I’d love to hear your thoughts!
